What the Abortion Pill Involves
Medical abortion, commonly called the abortion pill, is approved by the FDA for use through 10 weeks of pregnancy.
Two drugs are involved. Mifepristone is taken first and thins the uterine lining so the pregnancy detaches and ends. Misoprostol follows and causes the contractions that expel the pregnancy through the vagina.
The Risks She Should Weigh
Risks of the abortion pill include:
- An incomplete abortion that leaves pregnancy tissue behind and may require surgical treatment
- Heavy or prolonged bleeding that does not stop on its own
- Diarrhea and digestive pain
- An allergic reaction to either drug
- Infection, signaled by an unpleasant vaginal odor or a fever lasting more than 24 to 48 hours
Research has also shown that for some women, abortion can increase the risk of mental health effects, among them grief, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, sleep disturbance, substance abuse, and suicidal thinking.
Why a Medical Evaluation Comes First
Keep in mind that a positive pregnancy test does not automatically mean your girlfriend is eligible for a medical abortion.
Using an ultrasound scan to determine how far along she is, as well as the pregnancy’s location and whether the pregnancy is progressing, will determine what options are available to her.
Additionally, she will need to review preexisting health conditions and current medications with her healthcare provider before deciding.
